Mopan´s History

On Monday, September 12, 1923, Mopan Technical High School opened its doors to one hundred and thirty-one students. This youngster, and a staff of twelve teachers headed by principal Mr. Luis Frutos, began the arduous task of developing the first technical high school in the Cayo District. Twenty four years and two new principals later the task of building Mopan continues. In addition to the original two-storey building, we have since acquired and agriculture building, a cafeteria, a technical drawing building and air conditioned computer science lab a 28,000 gallon concrete water tank, a basketball court, eating sheds for students, an expanded staff room, and a science laboratory. Other facilities include a woodwork shop, a metalwork shop, a sewing room, and a food and nutrition room. The present student population have grown to more thatn five hundred. The school is administered under the Ministry of Education, the Board of Management, a Principal, two Vice-Principals and a faculty of thirty teachers. Support staff includes a bursar, a secretary, a librarian, and a caretaker. We have expanded the curriculum to include Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Principles of business, Principles of accounting, Economics and Social Studies at the CXC Level. Mopan Technical was the first high school in Belize to enter candidates and obtain passes in CXC Agriculture (Double and Single Award). We were also the first high school in the country to place a home page on the Internet and to computerize all our records.
